--If you have your password connected to your Apple ID:

OS X El Capitan: Reset a login password

If not: you have to restart into The Recovery Partition:

-- restart while holding down the CMD+R keys.

--When the "OS X Utilities" screen appears, select "Utilities"->"Terminal" from the menu bar.

--In the Terminal window, type:

resetpassword

(one word no spaces) and press return.

--The "Reset Password" window opens.

--Select your boot volume when it is not selected automatically.

--In the menu "Select the user account" select your user account when not already selected.

--Follow the prompts to reset the password (use a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, 0-9).

--Write the password down on a piece of paper.

--Select Restart from the apple menu.
